Screencasting on the iPad
There are a number of free apps out there that allow you to create a screencast on your mobile device. My mobile device of choice is the iPad. I love my iPad 2 with a built in video camera. With the camera and mic I have an all-in-one screencasting machine. The toughest part is deciding where to host my finished product once I have recorded it. Unless you only plan to view your screencast on the device that you created it on, you are going to have to upload it somewhere. There are many different places that you can host it, but the problem for many educators is just how accessible they are once they are uploaded. In many districts, YouTube and Vimeo are blocked. For that reason, you might want to do some checking for options in hosting your video to another site. If you like having a Powerpoint Presentation style screencast with multiple slides and multiple options for drawing, adding images and interactive browser windows, etc., Explain Everything is a near perfect solution. The only thing that would make it top notch is the ability to upload your finished product to a cloud based storage space. ShowMe is a great free app that allows you to directly upload your screencasts to their server. You can sign into your account and pull off the embed code for your screencast and then have the ability to place your screencast on any blog, webpage, social media cite, etc. You can also get a direct link that you can post as well. The only thing that I wish ShowMe allowed was multiple pages on their app. While planning for this screencasting course I corresponded with the co-creator of Explain Everything and learned that the app developers are on the verge of allowing users to upload their screencasts to a server as well. This is fantastic news! Remember to keep your screencasts relatively short. The longer they are, the more time it will take you to pull it off your device.
